HINDON CLOSE
The site is located within a neighbourhood of terraced houses, and this existing typology informed the design approach for the proposed social housing scheme. The courtyard typology serves as a central spatial element, creating a shared outdoor space where residents can meet, relax, and carry out daily activities.
The site entrance offers two separate routes: one for pedestrians and one for vehicles leading to the parking area and cycle storage. All unit entrances are accessed through the main courtyard, encouraging social interaction while also improving safety through natural surveillance. The courtyard’s open layout places no restrictions on how residents can use the space, allowing them the freedom to occupy it as they wish.
The scheme is designed to accommodate families, providing three 2-bedroom, 4-person units and two 4-bedroom, 6-person units. These homes are unified under a timber portal-frame canopy that reflects local design principles. Vertical timber elements extend from the canopy and continue down in front of the windows to prevent overlooking and enhance privacy.
Materials were selected for their durability and low-maintenance qualities. Vertical white zinc panels form the façades of the units, while square concrete tiles pave the courtyard to ensure longevity. Portions of the landscaped areas introduce greenery, planting, and trees to soften the space and enhance the residents’ living environment.
